Same Face, Different Judgement: You blink, they judge.
That’s not opinion, that’s science. Studies show that people form a first impression of you within 100 milliseconds of seeing your face. That’s faster than a sneeze. And here’s the thing! If you’ve got five different photos of yourself, five different people will make five different snap judgements. Same face. Different conclusions.
Which means … your profile photo is doing the talking before you get a chance to. And you’re in the driver’s seat whether you realise it or not.
First Impressions Happen Fast – Brutally Fast.
Let me spell this out for you. When someone sees your photo, be it on LinkedIn, your website, your email signature, or your dating profile, they are subconsciously scanning for:
-
- Facial expression
- Posture
- Clothing
- Visible body language (like your hands)
- Any jewellery or props
They build a story about you.
Are you warm | Confident | Approachable | Dodgy | Dull | Sharp | Likeable? Their brain is saying yes or no before you even say a word!
And here’s where it gets juicy: you can tweak this.
Posture Matters: Same Face, Different Message
Here’s where most people go wrong — they think it’s all about smiling. But the way you sit, stand, or hold yourself sends just as strong a message as your expression.
Take this example: imagine a photo where your hands are gently resting under your chin. It might come across as soft, relaxed — even nurturing. Now imagine one where you’re leaning in slightly, arms folded or hands visible but grounded. Suddenly, you look focused, confident, ready for business.
Same face. Different pose. Completely different read.
These small tweaks in body language are what shift people’s perceptions. Are you seen as approachable or passive? Confident or cocky? Calm or cold?
It’s all in how you carry yourself in the frame.
Where This Really Matters
This is where trust lives. You want to look capable, confident, and approachable. Not too corporate, not too casual. Like someone worth talking to.
Email Signature
Often overlooked, but it’s a branding goldmine. Make sure it matches your website and LinkedIn photo for visual consistency.
Website ‘About Me’
This is where people go when they’re thinking about working with you. Don’t ruin it with a weird crop or a holiday snap.
Dating Profile:
let’s be honest, they’re not reading your bio first. They’re scanning for vibe. Photos are the message.
So What Should You Do?
Simple:
- Pick a picture that supports how you want to be perceived. Not just one where you think you look good.
- Get professional photos taken that give you options. Different outfits, postures, moods – control the impression.
- Use your hands wisely. They’re a non-verbal cue of openness and honesty when used right.
- Get feedback. Not from your nan who thinks you’re gorgeous – from someone who’ll tell you straight.
Bottom line:
You’re not stuck with a “bad first impression.” You can shape it. One frame at a time.
That’s what I help people do , make sure their headshot works for them, not against them. Because in a digital world, your photo is your first pitch.

What Makes a Headshot Work for Business?
